To date this is the only English translation of the Ramayan written in the same poetic form as the original story, composed several thousands of years ago. It is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in Hinduism, as the story is presented in a concise, easy-to-follow manner, followed by a simple analysis of the main points at the end. The basic premise of the story centers around a Kingdom in Northern India, Ayodha. The King of Ayodha, Dsharat, has four sons, the oldest being "Ram." Ram is held in high esteem by all of his countrymen and is the presumed favorite to be king after Dasharat. However, one of Dasharat's wives, who is also Ram's stepmother, forces him to bansih Ram for fourteen years. Dasharat reluctantly does so, but dies of depression shortly thereafter. While in exile in the jungle, Ram's wife, Sita, is abducted by an evil King. To win his wife back, Ram seeks the aid of a local kiingdom, Kishkinda, and defeats the unjust King who took his wife. |
